Wow! After just a week I am in love with this light. I have such a hard time waking up in the mornings (I take a sleeping pill so I can sleep, but feel so hungover even after 8 hours of sleep.) I always hit the snooze button so many times ~ at least for an hour ~ and have been known to call in late because I just can't get started in the morning.
However, with this light I have not even hit the snooze button! It gradually wakes me up ~ enough that I am laying in bed stretching and READY to get up even before the actual alarm goes off. People at work have been telling me how much 'happier' I seem in the mornings and that I don't look like I am half asleep.
With the array of meds that I am on, they combine to make for a really miserable morning, but that is no longer the case.Programming the alarm was not that complicated ~ it comes with a quick start guide but just look at the pics, not that hard. The radio has a nice sound ~ I turn it up when I am getting dressed. Not a BOSE, but a good, crisp, clear sound. Even at higher volumes.The light itself is a bit 'bulkier' than I thought it would be, but the shape does help keep it looking nicer. I think it's durability it just fine ~ it's sitting beside the bed, not too much wear and tear there. Light has a wide range of dim / bright, but I have mine to come on the brightest there is. It actully has me waiting, ready to get out of bed by the time is is fully on. The light on the clock itself can be adjusted ~ I turn it on the lowest setting, but it can be brighter if needed.All in all, I wish I had taken my doctor's advice and bought this sooner!! It is expensive, but not if it changes your mornings ~ and for me, my whole day.

This Philips wake-up light (table lamp with alarm capabilities) is a broken down version of their another light,
Philips Hf3485 Wake-up Light Plus, White. The differences are that HF3485 has these additional functions:(1) dual alarms and (3) USB drive for MP3 music.The product is special in that the slow increase in light intensity truly makes waking up in the morning a gentle and less disturbing process. Built-in alarm sounds are fine.- Switch for alarm (for turning it on and off) is a mechanical one. That means, you have to set the alarm every night. Technology already exists for alarm clocks to automatically set themselves up every night. Philips chose not to implement that technology.- No presets for FM radio. One station can be set and that is all. That is sufficient for using as alarm, but not good for using as a radio if you like switching between the stations.Overall, it is a satisfactory product.

First, let me say that my husband and I are not morning people. So, we thought we would try this and see if it would help us wake up a bit better. Since my husband and I both get up when it is still dark in order to get to work, we thought this light might help us wake up. What we found is that it made it so much harder for us to get up. So, I think this must be one of those personal preference items. What we found is that the light starts a half hour before the alarm time is actually set. Even though the light is very dim to begin with and simulates a sunrise, when it clicked on initially, it was enough to wake both of us up. So, it actually woke us up a half hour before we needed to be up. So, the next night, we set the alarm to wake us up a half hour later. By doing this, it really wasn't any different than our regular alarm. The birds chirping and the wind chime alarm sounds are much more pleasant than our regular clock radio, but other than that we really didn't notice a difference. The other thing we noticed is that when you hit the snooze, it only turns off whatever sound you have playing, not the light. Since we are notorious for hitting the snooze a couple of times, this was hard for us.If you have a small night stand, this light is pretty big. It has a 7 inch round base and is cone shaped up to a 5 inch round top and is about 11 inches tall. So, it is pretty large. The light is very well made and I did like the dusk sleep option. I think I would have liked it better if I could have taken the morning alarm time down to a 10 minute sunrise simulation instead of a 30 minute. One thing I did notice is that the light actually gets pretty warm when it is turned on. One night I was using it instead of my regular nightstand lamp to read a book and when I went to shut it off I was surprised at how warm it was. It was easy to figure out all of the settings with the provided instructions. All-in-all, if you like to wake up this way, I am sure this is a good buy, as it seems to be really well made. However, it just didn't work for us.

Customer Rating Innovative product for people who wake before natural light, 2011-12-29
This review is for: Philips HF3471 60 Wake-Up Light - White
This innovative alarm clock is a bit on the large side, with somewhat awkward controls. At first glance, the Wake-Up Light appears to be an unusually large and clunky alarm clock. Its size makes more sense after turning on the light, which uses the entire plastic body as a lamp-shade.Although it may seem obvious, it's worth spelling out that the gradual lightening effect is most useful for those of you who are unfortunate enough to have to rise before dawn. If you wake much after first light and have any daylight filtering into your sleeping space, this clock will have less utility-- the brightening still helps me (much like I'd turn on the bedside light when my old alarm went off), but the daylight adjustment effect has less meaning when it's already bright out.I didn't personally see any use for the "dusk" mode (where the light goes gradually from bright to off), but I also usually sleep when I'm tired (not while I'm still wakeful but "have to" go to bed).The default alarm sound is very pleasing birdcalls. The chirps are plenty loud to wake me, but have none of the harsh, jarring nature of a buzzer.The alarm on-off-snooze control is the lever on the side of the unit, an easy to use design that doesn't require locating the right button in the dark. By contrast, the alarm setting buttons are near the bottom of the unit (under the LED clock display), and are awkward to use while still in bed (even awkward in general, if you actually keep other things on your nightstand).A bonus is the on-off switch allows using the Wake-Up Light as an adjustable brightness lamp. At setting 20 (max), the lamp is very bright indeed.The limited utility for people waking up after dawn, the large size, and the awkward controls are enough minuses to dock a star from my rating, but this Wake-Up Light is solid, and performs its unique function very well. Recommended.

This Hf3470 model has everything I need to wake-up in the morning. I used to have an alarm that sounds like R2D2 in the morning; it was cool, but I found myself hitting snooze 3-4 times before I actually got up. Plus the added darkness when I have to get up because I wake up before sunrise, I really did NOT want to get up.
This has been one of the most useful alarm clock I've ever had. I wake up with just the brightening light, even before the alarm goes off. And when the alarm finally goes off, it's birds chirping, so I'm not jolted awake. The bird chirps are very realistic. I was even confused this morning because there were real birds outside my window, and I thought I had forgotten to turn off my alarm! People complain about not being able to turn-off the light when they snooze. The light turning on in 9 minutes again would be too ajaring. If the point of this is to simulates a sunrise, you wouldn't be able to turn off the sun when you snooze.PROs:
*Adjustable Brightness to wake-up to. I keep mine at 16 out of 20.
*Adjustable alarm volume so you can adjust to comfort.
*Easy on-off-snooze switch.
*Radio sounds are decent (but not enough to substitute for good sound system)CONs:
*Price is steep--$90. I'd return immediately if you're unsure about the results.
*Only 3 sounds available for $90?? Bird chirps, Beeping, FM radio. Phillips, either let us add our own or put more on the clock!
Even the Hf3471 ($100) only comes with 1 extra sound--wind chimes (+dimmer function).
*It's pretty big, barely fits on my window ledge.
*No battery back-up.TIPS
*Using this as a reading lamp will definitely shorten the life of the bulb.
*If you would like a dimmer function and more sounds, look at the Hf3471 and the HF3485

Customer Rating Makes me feel less like a hibernating bear on a dark winter morning, 2011-11-13
This review is for: Philips HF3471 60 Wake-Up Light - White
In the past, I've been likened to a hibernating bear in my sleep patterns, and have relied on one of those vibrating alarms marketed to the elderly and hearing-impaired. I've found that natural light is much more effective at rousing me from my slumber than noise, and have had great success with a standalone "happy light" to beat my self-diagnosed SAD in the winter months. So I was delighted to discover this device, which combines the happy light concept with an alarm. I have used it for about a week and have woken-up within the alarm's 30-minute window of "sunrise" every time. What I like:
Well, it has the power to wake up a hibernating bear with minimal trauma, so gold star for that!
Relatively easy to set-up.
It has a radio, which is quaint? Anyway, I like it.
Adjustable (1-20) volume and brightness settings -- I took mine to 20/20.
Like the sunrise gradual wake-up concept.
The twittering bird setting is really annoying, and thus, perfect for an alarm noise. You seriously feel like you're in a low-rent version of Cinderella, and these crazy birds are about to swoop in and braid your hair. What I don't like:
Very small buttons on the front base that are kind of hard to read, especially if you are a hibernating bear squinting in the light at 6:25am.
Joystick/toggle to turn the alarm on/off/snooze. I personally did not like this - hard to read the positions. I used it to turn off the alarm to stop the noise, then I forgot to toggle it back on, which meant no alarm the next day.
This lamp gets hot! The top gets hot to the touch, especially if you're holding on to it to stabilize it while trying to select the tiny buttons on the base with your bear paw.Overall, I do recommend this lamp alarm for people who need sunshine to live and wake and thrive. It is good for what it does, but I do wish it had been a little better designed.

Customer Rating HOT! No battery backup. Nice otherwise, 2012-01-04
This review is for: Philips HF3471 60 Wake-Up Light - White
Almost a deal-breaker: No battery backup. It's an alarm clock, fer goodness sake. I suspect there's no battery backup because the unit gets very hot - it's a halogen bulb - and intense heat could blow up a battery. Even an external battery option would be better than none. Workaround: Uninterruptable Power Source, basically a surge suppressor strip with its own battery. But the bulb will wear out an UPS battery fast - a built-in battery backup for the alarm (clock & noise) would really be a better option.Worrisome: It comes with warning labels telling you it gets REALLY hot, possible fire hazard. It's not super energy efficient to use a hot lamp on an air-conditioning day. I would be concerned if I had young children coming into the room when the light is on.It's kind of cool looking. Will blend well with modern/contemporary, but it's not so funky that it would be out of place in a more traditional room, either. It does what it's supposed to do - gradually brightens to prepare your body to wake up. Light level is adjustable. Alarm type and volume are adjustable. Pretty intuitive to program (lots of choices, so it takes some thinking, but the manual is not absolutely essential). I sprang it on my husband - one day he woke up and there's a bright light and chirping - and he had no trouble groggily shutting it off. The stick controller is pretty clever - flick down for snooze, up for off, it sticks out so you can find it by feel. The other controls are low-profile buttons with nice tactile response and a sleek, unobtrusive look.Since there's no battery backup, I set it to light up and chirp quietly - like birds welcoming sunrise - before my actual RELIABLE battery-backed-up alarm goes off. It's an okay bedside light. Which is good, because it takes a lot of nightstand real estate compared to a simple alarm clock - remember, it's hot enough that you have to leave space around it to prevent fire risk. It has an antenna wire, which is nice for clock radio.I bought it mostly because I moved from a sunny locale to a foggy locale. I used to like to wake up to sun, now it's an unofficial holiday if we even see it, like groundhog day, and the sun keeps seeing its own shadow. So expensive electronic sunrise is the only sunrise I get anymore, and this sucker does a nice job at that. If I have a real strong snooze button urge, I turn towards the light and let my brain get used to the idea that it's daytime. I use it as a daytime light, too. It provides a bright light that tricks my brain into thinking 2 pm is still daytime, even here in the Pac Northwest. At first, the brightest setting was blindingly bright - I couldn't even look at it - but I got used to it quickly. I would carry it into another room, but, you know, no battery backup. I would buy this again at the gold box price. If it had a battery backup, it could be worth the regular price. I would recommend it to a friend.

This alarm clock/bedside lamp is truly wonderful. It is made well and has simple functions. The light in it creates this bright white light when turned on fully, or you can get softer, warmer glow by decreasing the power. I'm one of those sleepers who, if left alone, can sleep for 10 hours. It used to be that getting up early in the mornings was simply one of the worst parts of my day. However, this Philips light really makes getting up earlier So Much Easier because of it's bright light & 30-minute progression. I've used these dawn-simulation alarms for 15 years. I've had a wide range of them, including BioBrite Sunrise Clock (two!), Verilux Lamp/Alarm clock (the worst), and an older Philip's model. The Philips is the brand I go to because of their quality, design and warranty. BioBrite and Verilux just couldn't compare.This model offers a dusk simulation to help get you drowsy vs. that quicker shut off that leaves you blinking. I like that you can program how much time you prefer (15, 30, 45, 60 & 90 minutes). Another great feature is the clock itself. I have a hard time sleeping in a room with any light. The Philips light gives you four options brightness, and their dim is seriously dim! Plus it's orange, which is the color that is the least bright in a dark room. They must have listened to the consumers when this feature was designed. The one feature I *initally* didn't like about Philips' wake-up lights was the 30-minute light progression. I'd wished I'd been able to personalize it to, say, 15-minutes, or 5-minutes. However, after using this for a while, I understand that I wake up more easily (and energized) with that dawn progression's slowly building crescendo of bright light. Seriously, it works better at 30-minutes and I wake up so much easier. It's simply smarter.It has 3 sounds to wake up to: bird chirps, a beep and wind chimes. Personally, the beep just brings back bad memories of my pre-dawn-simulation days, so I stick with the other two which are really pleasant.I just want to wrap up with these few points:
* This has revolutionized waking up early for me, Philips is way better than other brands
* Easy, nearly genius, snooze and off switch (the stick on the side)
* Wonderful light you can use to set any mood in your room
* Replaceable halogen bulb
* Sleek design
* Easy to read by
* Enough options to satisfy, but not enough so you don't understand all your clock's functions
* 30-minute dawn simulation with bright light is energizing and unmatchedHope this helps.
