I already own a natural wake up alarm clock by a different brand/company. That one works great! A friend commented on how much they liked it, so I bought this item as a gift, assuming they would be similar (my mistake). Not worth the money. It is small (which is fine). However, it is very cheap and nearly impossible to program. The "instructions" are a piece of paper labeling the parts. It does require 3 AA batteries, and has a spot for a DC adapter, but it doesn't include the adapter and instead lists a number to call to order one. I did not use this, but I imagine that you would go through a number of batteries through the year and there was no "low battery" light or symbol to tell you to change them. If you were setting this alarm to make it somewhere on time (why else would you buy this?), I imagine you may find out one morning that the batteries failed during the night. The "soothing" sounds were, in my opinion obnoxious. The noise was akin to the free ring tones that come with a common cell phone. All of it was loud and very abrupt. The light was very bright and though it does dim, it starts much brighter than I expected it would. I'm so glad I opened it and looked at it before I wrapped it up and gave it to my friend. I honestly would be embarrassed to give this to anyone, let alone a good friend. To recap: Piece of cheap, overpriced plastic that does the bare minimum of what it promises to do, and not very well.

Customer Rating No back light, 2011-08-21

This clock is small, as another reviewer mentioned, but I wanted a small clock for my nightstand. I sent the clock back because there is no backlight, so there is no way to see the time if it is dark- the digits are black. You could turn on the sunlight feature to see the time, but then you'd be blinded by the bright light if you were in the dark. Also, the quality of the nature sounds is poor. The AC adapter is not included, which for the $50 paid for this small clock you'd think it would be included.

I bought this alarm clock to help me sleep better at night. First I received a defective clock that could not be programmed and needed to be returned, at my expense. At the time I emailed about the return procedures, I asked about the AC Adapter and I was told someone would get back to me--I assumed that it had been omitted accidently from the shipment ($50 for an alarm clock with no AC Adapter?). Never heard back about that. When I got the confirmed delivery receipt, I emailed again, asking when the replacement would be shipped. I got a "Dear Customer" (did not use my name even though I had signed the email) "you will be notified when the replacement item is shipped". I received the replacement unit about a week later, again, no AC adapter...which, from the literature enclosed, I learned I needed to purchase (why not give that option up front?). So I called the 800 number and placed the order--$10 for an AC adapter and another almost $9 for shipping (US Postal could have shipped it in their standard shipping boxes for $3.95). I received the adapter last night and pushed it in to the adapter port, and the port fell out inside the alarm clock.I am so fed up with this cheaply made clock and poor customer service that I've thrown the clock out rather than try to deal with them on getting a refund of my Am Ex points used to make this purchase. Spend the extra money for another model if you want a sunrise alarm clock.

Customer Rating $50 for this? Don't waste your money, 2011-06-09

Just received this "alarm clock" in the mail. Don't waste your money on it. It is small, you can barely read the numbers and it is very cheaply made. It doesn't even come with a power cord, which means you need to spend more on batteries. What a rip off. The company selling these should be ashamed of themselves for putting this up for $50. They are clearly robbing people. I returned it immediately.

This is my first review... I felt I had to leave it to clarify some of the characteristics of this clock. In an effort to sleep better at night, I needed to remove as many electronic items as possible from my room. Including the two cellphones we used as alarm clocks. While it might sound weird, I realized I would sleep like a baby while visiting family but would always wake in the middle of the night at home. Then I realized it was because we were sleeping in rooms without TVs, night lamps etc. So I did some research... for the best nights sleep your room needs to be DARK and free of as many electronics as possible. If you think about it, every electronic item in your room has some kind of light on it, might be small..but the more you have the more it adds up. So I was searching for a sunlight alarm clock that wouldn't add the additional light from being backlit and this was the only one I found. On to the clock1) It does run on batteries. I think this is great, less electricity in the room and also great for travel. It does have the ability to be run on power if you purchase a universal 6V power cord as well. 2)Its smaller than the others, also great for travel. It is very light, which does make it feel cheap, however if it holds up I can look past that. It will add minimal weight to luggage for traveling.3) The clock is not backlit, but you can readily see the time if you turn on the light.4) It does have 4 different intensities of light, but I wish the darkest one was just a little dimmer. If I am facing the light when it starts its "gradual sunlight intensity" I wake up. 5) The sounds. There are 10 of them. I did not find the bird sounds or the nature sounds to sound any more fake then I do on other naturescape CDs I have purchased for sleeping. In fact, I kept confusing the bird sounds on the clock this morning for the actual birds outside. I have to admit the "heart beating" option was a little weird for me, but someone else might like it. Maybe to use in a babies room as they fall asleep at night? It is currently half the price of the next lowest Sunlight wake up clock on amazon. I paid $50 for this clock, it was more than I really wanted to pay, but if it helps me wake up easier in winter then it will be worth it. I will post updates after I have tried it out longer i.e. battery life etc.
